Nyerere National Park, formerly Selous Game Reserve, is one of Africa’s largest and most remote wilderness areas. A short scenic flight from Zanzibar takes you into a landscape of savannahs, forests, wetlands and the wildlife-rich Rufiji River.

On your first day, meet your guide at the airstrip and set out on a 4x4 game drive in search of elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffalo and abundant birdlife. After lunch at your lodge or tented camp, experience the reserve from the water on a Rufiji River boat safari, where hippos and crocodiles are often seen.

The following morning brings another early game drive, when predators are most active, followed by breakfast, lunch and your return flight to Zanzibar. With one overnight stay, this safari gives you more time to experience the park’s quiet, uncrowded wilderness.

June to October is ideal for dry-season wildlife viewing. From November to May the landscape is greener, birdlife is especially rich and the park feels even more secluded.
